intro

Luckily this Kalametiya sanctuary has traditional catamarans to go bird watching. Unlike boats with engines, you can float discreetly through the mangroves. Even though this sanctuary is smaller compared to other national parks around, there are vast number of birds are around. This Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is also facing pressure from environmental degradation. Initially, this sanctuary was declared a sanctuary in 1938. By then this sanctuary had 2,500 hectares. However, in 1946 this area was deregulated again to allow the British to go duck hunting. This precarious legal position existed until 1984. It was in 1984 this place was gazetted again as a sanctuary from Kalametiya Lagoon to Lunama Lagoon.

Ussangoda is an outcrop of a rock type known as ‘serpentine rocks’, which is a rare formation in Sri Lanka. According to geologists, serpentine bodies are naturally found in the vicinity of the boundary of Highland and Vijayan Complex, two geological plates that make the country. Ussangoda is one of the six places in the island which have serpentine rock formation.
