Visit Lunuganga – Geoffrey Bawa's Masterpiece

Lunuganga Estate, the enchanting country home of the celebrated Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, is a true testament to his visionary genius. What began in 1947 as a personal garden soon became the very muse that inspired Bawa’s transformation from a lawyer, called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1940, to one of Asia’s most influential architects. The lush garden at Lunuganga served as his creative laboratory, where he experimented with design, spaces, and structures that would go on to shape Sri Lanka's architectural landscape.

Over the years, Bawa continuously evolved the estate, reshaping its spaces until his passing in 1998. After his death in 2003, the estate was entrusted to the Lunuganga Trust. Today, the gardens are open to the public, offering a rare opportunity to explore the landscape that inspired so much of his work, while the estate’s buildings now operate as a charming country house hotel.

For those seeking a deeper understanding of Bawa’s architectural vision, curatorial tours led by a Geoffrey Bawa Trust curator can be arranged by prior appointment (subject to availability), with a maximum group size of twenty people.

Guests are welcome to take personal photographs in the outdoor spaces, as long as flash and tripods are not used. For any commercial or publication use of photographs, express permission from the Geoffrey Bawa Trust is required.
