Visit Dimbulagala Temple & Namal Pokuna Archaeological Site

Visit Dimbulagala Temple & Namal Pokuna Archaeological Site with CCT Sri Lanka’s local guide and experience a unique blend of history, spirituality, and nature in Sri Lanka’s ancient heartland.

Also known as Dimbulagala Raja Maha Viharaya, this sacred site dates back to the 3rd century BCE, during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. Surrounded by the peaceful Dimbulagala Mountain Range, it offers both a spiritual retreat and a great hiking experience. Scenic trails lead you to the summit of Dimbulagala Rock, making it perfect for nature lovers and pilgrims alike.

In addition, the area features ancient rock caves, many of which are still home to meditative Buddhist monks. These caves preserve a living tradition that spans over 2,000 years. One of the site’s most remarkable findings is an 11-line Brahmi inscription, believed to be from the time of King Saddhatissa. Interestingly, the inscription refers to three early bank like institutions—Moolathana, Devathana, and Badananam Arihathana. These are thought to have worked like early banks. Moreover, it provides rare insights into ancient society, mentioning roles such as teachers, artists, jewelers, Brahmins, and even slaves.

During the Polonnaruwa period, the temple was revived as a religious center. King Parakramabahu I turned to the monks of Dimbulagala to reform and unify the Buddhist monastic order across the island.

Today, the temple continues to be a place of deep spiritual importance. It is also a symbol of sacrifice. On May 26, 1995, Dimbulagala Hamuduruwo gave his life to protect this sacred site from separatist forces.

Therefore, if you're looking to connect with Sri Lanka’s spiritual and historical roots, this is the perfect destination.
