Birds and Butterfly Watching in Mannar

Mannar, a designated Ramsar site, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts, renowned for its incredible birdlife and vibrant butterflies. During the northern winter, many migratory birds travel from cooler regions in northern India and other areas to the warmer climates of Sri Lanka to continue feeding. As a result, the region’s lagoons, mudflats, and shallow coastal waters offer an ideal habitat for migratory flamingos (රජ සියක්කාරයා - Phoenicopterus roseus), making Mannar one of the top birdwatching locations in Sri Lanka. In fact, 66 different bird species have been recorded around Adam’s Bridge, Talaimannar, and Vankalai, showcasing the area’s rich biodiversity.

Every January, large flocks of flamingos fill the skies and waters of Mannar, offering an unforgettable spectacle. Interestingly, about 70% of the flamingos in the region are sub-adults, with pale plumage that marks their successful breeding and growth. This provides a unique opportunity to observe these majestic birds at various stages of their life cycle. In addition to the flamingos, you may also encounter the Sri Lanka Junglefowl (වළි කුකුළා) and the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill (අළු කෑදැත්තා), both of which are commonly spotted around the area.

Crimson Rose Butterfly

Furthermore, Mannar is home to the stunning Crimson Rose butterfly, a large, vibrant insect adorned with striking black, white, and crimson wings. These butterflies migrate from Dhanushkodi, at the southern tip of India’s Rameswaram Island, to Sri Pada in Sri Lanka each October. As a result, they add an extra burst of color to the already stunning landscape.

To enhance your experience, our expert lepidopterists and ornithologists will guide you to hidden observation points in Vankalai, Thalladi, Erukkalampiddy, and Talaimannar. With their expert guidance, you’ll discover the best spots for bird and butterfly watching in this untouched paradise.
